A brief history of Swanton VT 

The town of Swanton was first chartered in 1763 as one of the New Hampshire grants by Benning Wentworth, the governor of New Hampshire province. It was named for a British Army office who traveled through the area during the French and Indian war. There were French land grants starting in 1734 and small French settlements including a Catholic mission in what is now known as Swanton from as early as 1740.

Because it's close to the border with New France, it wasn't populated by anyone from the British colonies in the 1760s and 1770s. Swanton today employs people in manufacturing, health care and retail services.
