A brief history of Milton VT
Milton was first chartered by Governor Benning Wentworth of New Hampshire back on June 8, 1763 before the state of Vermont even existed. Almost 20 years later in February of 1782, the town was settled by a team of six early pioneers. By 1795 there were about 300 settlers living in Milton.
The early settlers made most of their income from lumber and potash until 1840. At that point dairy products became popular and the town began selling butter and cheese. Milton became the home of the Catamount Speedway which operated until 1988. Many of those racers have gone on to NASCAR fame. Milton today has a municipal building, a school system, a library, a police force, a fire department and several churches.
